How I Built My Full-Stack Portfolio Using Next.js, Express, and MongoDB
Building a personal portfolio is one of the best ways to showcase technical skills and real-world development experience. Instead of creating a static website, I decided to build a production-ready full-stack portfolio that demonstrates frontend development, backend engineering, database integration, authentication, and cloud deployment.
Why I Built This Project
I wanted a platform where I could:
- Showcase projects
- Publish technical blogs
- Manage content dynamically
- Learn full-stack development
- Understand real-world deployment workflows
Technology Stack
Frontend
- Next.js
- TypeScript
- Tailwind CSS
- Axios
Backend
- Node.js
- Express.js
- JWT Authentication
- bcrypt
Database
- MongoDB Atlas
- Mongoose
Deployment
- Vercel
- Render
Key Features
The portfolio includes:
- Responsive design
- Dynamic project management
- Blog system
- Admin authentication
- Protected routes
- MongoDB integration
- Cloud deployment
Challenges Faced
During development I encountered several challenges.
CORS Issues
After deployment, frontend requests were blocked by browser security policies. This was resolved by properly configuring CORS on the Express backend.
Deployment Errors
I experienced module resolution issues due to differences between Windows and Linux file systems. Correcting file naming conventions solved the problem.
Authentication Flow
Implementing JWT authentication required understanding token generation, storage, verification, and protected route handling.
Lessons Learned
This project taught me:
- Full-stack architecture
- API development
- Authentication systems
- Database design
- Deployment workflows
- Production debugging
Future Improvements
Planned enhancements include:
- Blog management dashboard
- Contact message dashboard
- Visitor analytics
- Rich text editor
- Enhanced admin controls
Conclusion
Building this portfolio was an excellent opportunity to combine frontend development, backend engineering, database management, and cloud deployment into a single production-ready project. The experience significantly improved my understanding of modern web development and software engineering practices.
