Building SheoMart: A Production-Ready Multi-Vendor Grocery Marketplace

SheoMart is my largest full-stack project to date. The goal was to build a scalable grocery marketplace inspired by platforms like Blinkit, Swiggy Instamart, and Flipkart Grocery while following production-level software engineering practices.

Project Vision

Instead of creating another CRUD application, I wanted to design a system that resembles a real-world marketplace with multiple user roles and independent dashboards.

The platform currently supports:

  • Customers
  • Store Owners
  • Platform Administrators

Each role has its own permissions, workflows, and dashboard.

Tech Stack

Frontend:

  • Next.js
  • React
  • TypeScript
  • Tailwind CSS
  • Zustand
  • React Query

Backend:

  • Node.js
  • Express.js
  • TypeScript
  • MongoDB
  • Mongoose
  • JWT Authentication
  • Zod Validation

Deployment:

  • Vercel
  • Render
  • MongoDB Atlas

Features Implemented

  • Secure JWT Authentication
  • Role-Based Authorization
  • Customer Dashboard
  • Store Owner Dashboard
  • Platform Admin Dashboard
  • Seller Approval Workflow
  • Product Management
  • Category Management
  • Inventory Management
  • Reviews & Ratings
  • Responsive Marketplace UI
  • Customer Profile
  • Production Deployment

Architecture

The backend follows a layered architecture with controllers, services, models, validators, middleware, and utility modules. This keeps the codebase modular, maintainable, and scalable as new features are added.

Security

The project emphasizes secure development practices including authentication, authorization, request validation, rate limiting, Helmet, secure headers, and production deployment best practices.

Challenges

The most challenging parts of development included:

  • Designing role-based access control
  • Building scalable dashboard modules
  • Managing multiple user workflows
  • Integrating frontend and backend seamlessly
  • Preparing the project for production deployment

What's Next

Future updates include:

  • Shopping Cart
  • Orders
  • Razorpay Payment Integration
  • Wishlist
  • Coupons
  • Notifications
  • Search Improvements
  • Analytics
  • Mobile Application using React Native

SheoMart continues to evolve as I learn better software architecture, security practices, and scalable system design.
